The Great (e)Con(omic) Game.

I have a number of thoughts with regards to the American stimulus plan and just one thought when it comes to the Canadian version of said plan. First, the American plan:
Most of what the Republican critics have to say about Obama’s plan is true. It is a total grab-bag of social policy wrapped

“The Americans are not your enemy.”

Wow. What a difference a week makes.!!
Last week… it was the old “You are either with us, or against us.” Which, of course, was a little weird for us Canadians (we’re with ya on Afghanistan but not Iraq so…?) and pretty F’n clear to a great many others: you are the enemy. Now, Obama

Fearless.

Yesterday I watched some people arguing over Obama’s order to close Guantanamo Bay. There was only one guy on the panel who attempted to make the case that this was a bad move. His reasoning was very revealing. Essentially, this guy was saying that if closing Guantanamo Bay raised the possibility that

This Just In: Man Buys Comic Book!

You know there isn’t much news to report in Victoria when I show up on the front page of the Times Colonist for buying a comic book:

CNN just did a story about portable power devices for laptops and cell phones. The problem is that the batteries on these devices have not evolved while the power demands of the devices themselves have increased significantly. The result: devices that can do more for less time. The solution (according to CNN)

Death by prohibition.

I received news recently that a distant family member (one I had never met) was shot to death in a “gang-related incident.” This young man was in his early twenties and from what I am told was merely the victim of bad timing and- more to the point -bad laws. He did not

Testing… Testing… 1..2..3..

There was a point in the election campaign last year when Joe Biden made a comment about the world “testing” Obama with some kind of crisis early on in his term. Well his term hasn’t even started yet, and I don’t think anyone expected the test would come from one of America’s most stalwart
